Literacy & Language
Literacy and language are at the heart of learning at Shefford Lower School. Through reading, writing and language learning, pupils develop the communication skills they need to succeed across the curriculum. We aim to foster a love of reading, support confident writing and help children become clear and effective communicators.
One of the highlights of the week was a visit from the Word Guerrilla, who brought energy and excitement into school through his dynamic performance style. He wowed the children with his rapping and demonstrated how poetry can be fun, expressive and accessible to everyone. Each year group took part in their own workshop, where they explored ambitious vocabulary, experimented with rhythm and rhyme, and collaborated to create a powerful collective poem. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and it helped to build their confidence in speaking, listening and performing.
Throughout the week, classrooms were transformed into Reading Cafés, creating a calm and inviting environment where children could explore a wide range of books and genres. Pupils had the opportunity to discover new authors, share recommendations with their peers, and develop their love of reading for pleasure. These sessions encouraged thoughtful discussion about books and helped children to broaden their reading choices.
The week concluded with a fantastic celebration of World Book Day, which saw both children and staff come to school dressed as their favourite book characters. There was a real buzz of excitement as pupils proudly shared their costumes and brought in their favourite books to discuss with classmates. Across the day, children took part in a variety of engaging reading and writing activities, including designing their own bookmarks, creating comic strips, inventing new characters and stories, and completing other creative literacy tasks.
