Languages & Global Community

Subject Leader-  Mrs Carter

At Shefford Lower School, we believe that learning languages opens doors to the wider world and helps children understand their place within a diverse and interconnected global community. Through the teaching of French and our meaningful global partnerships — including our twinning school in Sri Lanka — pupils develop authentic connections that bring cultures, traditions and perspectives to life.

We see language learning as more than vocabulary and grammar; it is a gateway to empathy, respect and collaboration. By exploring different countries, communities and ways of life, children build cultural awareness and learn to appreciate both similarities and differences. Our global links encourage real-life communication, shared experiences and a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves.

We actively promote values of inclusion, mutual respect and open-mindedness. Pupils are encouraged to think beyond their immediate environment, consider global issues in an age-appropriate way and understand how their actions can have an impact on others around the world. Through dialogue, shared projects and cultural celebration, we nurture curiosity, confidence and compassion.

Our vision is to inspire every learner to become a confident communicator and a thoughtful global citizen as someone who values diversity, embraces new perspectives and recognises the power of language to build bridges across communities and continents.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands it goes to his head, if you talk to him in his own language it goes to his heart
