Child and Family Support

At Shefford Lower School the emotional welfare of our pupils is of the greatest importance. We train all staff as first responders.  We understand that many children and families experience difficult times which can make a happy, successful school and home life a struggle.

If you have any worries or concerns about your child, you can always talk to the adults from their class, as they know your child well and can help you to address the issues.  However, you may feel more at ease discussing some matters away from the class.

In school we have a team who support pupils who may need help. Extra to the class, we have staff in Poplar Class, Mrs Moore who carries out activities in groups as well as with individuals. We also have a full-time dedicated Family Support Worker, Julia Parry, who as part of her role, provides support to children and families who may be experiencing difficulties.

Mrs Parry works closely within the team, comprising also of our:

Inclusion Manager, Mrs Pearson.

and our

 Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Freeman.

It may be that support is needed for a short while or it could be a longer process.

   How can I help?

  • By listening and appreciating parents/carers issues and offer suggestions and advice for individuals and families on behaviour management, boundaries, routines, school attendance, e-safety, healthy eating to name a few.

  • Signposting to other services available with Central Bedfordshire.

  • Working with and supporting families during key school transition, including newcomers and moving onto other schools.

  • Supporting families who are going through difficult times including relationship breakdown, bereavement, mental well-being and financial hardship.

  • In consultation with parents/carers I can signpost children or support on a 1:1 basis. This may include listening and working with them in different ways for example: anger management and control, key schools transitions, development of pupil self-esteem and confidence, friendship issues, bullying including social networking, family issues: bereavement, new baby in the family, parent’s separation/divorce.
